You want to put your best foot forward when meeting a professional for the first time, right?
You should do the same when you’re meeting professionals digitally.
How to change LinkedIn URL
- Go to your profile page
- Click Edit public profile & URL on the right
- Under the Edit URL section on the right, click the pencil icon next to current URL
- Change your LinkedIn URL to what you want
- Click Save
- Go to your profile page and check the URL changed
As social media becomes increasingly important for networking and career growth, this means taking a harder look at your profiles. One that will always be gracing the business cards you hand out is your LinkedIn account. Or, more accurately, your LinkedIn URL.
You should want that URL to reflect you as a professional: detail-oriented, adept, purposeful.
Chances are, if you’ve never touched your LinkedIn URL, it looks something like this:
I would not describe that as detail-oriented, adept or purposeful, would you?
When you create a profile, LinkedIn assigns you a bunch of random letters and numbers for your URL. The good news is, you aren’t tied to that unattractive, impossible-to-remember litany dragging behind your name.
Here’s how to change your URL to something deserving of business cards.
How to change your LinkedIn URL
First, you’ll want to log in to your profile. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be on your homepage, which is a newsfeed featuring what your connections have posted or liked.
1. Go to your LinkedIn profile page
You can find your profile on the navigation bar at the top of the page, where your photo is featured.
Click Me and then View Profile.
2. Click Edit public profile & URL
Now, look to the right side of the page. You’ll notice an option to Edit public profile & URL. It’s not immediately apparent that those words are a link, but click them.
It will take you to a new page. From here, look again to the top right of the page.
3. Click the pencil icon to edit LinkedIn URL
You’ll see a place to Edit URL. Click the little pencil icon next to your current URL.
4. Change LinkedIn URL
Now you can change the last section of your URL to whatever you want. Well, almost whatever you want. You’ll notice a warning that you cannot include spaces, symbols or special characters. It’s also not case sensitive, so even if you capitalize letters, they’ll appear as lowercase in the URL every time.
So what can the URL include? It can be 3-100 letters or numbers. But the whole point of this exercise is to simplify your URL, so let’s stick to the lower range.
I highly recommend changing it to your first and last name. If you have a pretty common name like me, that option might already be taken. If that’s the case, you can add a number after your name. Or, add a word that relates to your industry or expertise. For example, mine is linkedin.com/in/hollyhuntwrites because (surprise!) I like to write.
5. Save LinkedIn URL
Click Save and you should see this green banner with a message from LinkedIn pop up at the top of the page.
6. Check your new LinkedIn URL
As LinkedIn warned, sometimes it takes a bit of time for the URL to refresh. However, I have never had an issue with it. To check if it refreshed quickly, click on Back to LinkedIn.com in the top right.
You are now back on your home page. Go to the Me dropdown again and click View My Profile.
Check the URL at the top of the page. It should be your new URL! So fresh and so clean. If it is still your old URL, give it a few minutes and refresh the page. If that doesn’t work, try closing the browser and opening LinkedIn again.
Next steps with your LinkedIn
Congratulations, your LinkedIn URL is now business-card ready.
